It's a case of emotional exploitation, plain and simple.
People the world over love California's giant sequoias—Earth's most massive trees and among its oldest. In the wake of reports of sequoia mortality from recent wildfires timber interests and their enabling agencies entered the scene.
They initiated a costly publicly funded campaign to "save" the big trees. How? By undertaking intensive management steps to "reduce fuels."
Take action today to stop the misleading and harmful Save Our Sequoias Act!
Well funded in the wake of a groundswell of public concern for the sequoias, Big Timber and its allies have made hay for years now with their "Save the sequoias" buzz phrase. However, their logging, industrial thinning and tree plantations are damaging watersheds, wildlife habitat and sequoia regeneration while doing nothing to reduce actual wildfire risk and hazard.
With conservation groups including Forests Forever sounding the alarm, these extractive interests now see a threat to their revenue stream. They've enlisted uncritical politicians and placed a bill in Congress that would both lock in and ramp up their damaging activities.
The cynically misnamed Save Our Sequoias Act (H.R. 2709 and its companion S. 4103) has passed the House and a key Senate committee. It is dangerously close to final passage on the Senate floor. But we still have time to stop it!
Missing from press accounts of sequoia mortality in recent years has been the fact that sequoias need the hottest wildfire to regenerate and thrive—hot enough to kill some sequoias while at the same time absolutely necessary to regenerate many many more than the fires kill.

Now is the time, before the midterm election, to flood Congress with messages. After the election on Nov. 3, the lame duck Congress will return and its members could then, without near-term electoral consequences, all too easily move this bill on to final passage.
Take action now to defeat the Save Our Sequoias Act!
