Legislation that would harm the world's most massive trees, the giant sequoias, is moving rapidly in Congress. It may soon reach the Senate floor unless we stop it.

The disingenuously named "Save Our Sequoias Act" employs debunked science and outright lies to argue that wildfire threatens to drive the sequoias to extinction, when the opposite is true. Sequoias need fire—very hot fire—to best reproduce and thrive.

Take action now to make sure the phony "Save Our Sequoias Act" does not become law!

Although known and loved around the world, sequoias have always enjoyed patchy protections here at home. They occur naturally in mid-elevation Sierra Nevada western slopes, in stands with other types of commercially valuable conifers much sought-after by timber companies.

Now, with global warming bringing more-prolonged fire weather, timber interests think they have found an opportunity. Portraying wildfire as a threat to the survival of the species, logging advocates are tugging at the public's heartstrings in a fervor to "save the sequoias." The basic pitch: reduce fuels and plant sequoia seedlings.

But the more-intense blazes that do kill some sequoias are vital for their regeneration as a whole—opening their cones, freeing up nutrients, and enabling sequoia seedlings to penetrate a thinner duff layer to reach water.

Ample documentation shows that natural regeneration, especially after intense fire events, is mostly lush and abundant in sequoia groves.

Scroll to the bottom of this alert to our RESOURCES section for much more on the sequoias and this threat to them.

Tell elected officials that their bill would do the opposite of protecting the sequoias. It must not pass!
