GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE:
SELECTED RESOURCES

Several organizations are educating citizens about the effects of global climate change and the devastating impacts these could have environmentally, socially and economically. Most advocate combating global warming by limiting emissions of greenhouse gasses, especially from the combustion of fossil fuels.

Environmental Defense Fund (EDF)
The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is a national group with over 300,000 members. EDF links "science, economics, and law to create innovative and economically viable solutions to today’s environmental problems." All of EDF’s programs are aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Greenpeace
Among its many environmental action campaigns, Greenpeace works on global warming and its causes, oriented strongly toward confronting corporate and institutional actors that contribute to climate change.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
Established by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is an organization of scientists who evaluate peer-reviewed and published scientific and technical literature on global climate change. The IPCC has issued four reports on global climate change since 1990 that synthesize current research and provide assessments and projections. The 2007 report is available in PDF on the IPCC website:

The Kyoto Protocol

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

The Kyoto Protocol is an addition to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This very thorough site has a history of the treaty, texts of the protocol, and current news about the protocol and climate change.

The White House
This letter from the president gives the current administration's views on climate change and the Kyoto Protocol.

National Environmental Trust (NET)
The National Environmental Trust (NET) helps mobilize citizens concerned about global climate change. In addition to an excellent website, NET publishes a weekly e-mail newsletter, Climate Countdown.

Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has a broad-based educational campaign dealing with global climate change. Their website has a considerable number of informative articles and a links page with a comprehensive list of environmental organizations working on global climate change.

The Pew Center for Global Climate Change
The Pew Center is a nonprofit organization and clearinghouse of information on global climate change. The focus of Pew is on convincing corporations that it is in their best interests to support efforts to stop the greenhouse gas emissions that are driving climate change.

Rainforest Action Network
Rainforest Action Network (RAN) focuses on saving the world’s rainforests. Although it does not have a current campaign for global warming, RAN has helped protect millions of acres in tropical rainforest regions through its "Protect-an-Acre" Program.

The Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change
Commissioned by then-Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown, The Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change by British economist Nicholas Stern was released on October 30, 2006. The report examines the potential economic effects of global warming. The report is available online in PDF at:

Union of Concerned Scientists
With over 70,000 members, the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) has a sizable media department and is a widely respected source of information on global climate change.

Global-Warming Skeptics and Industry-Sponsored Groups

The Global Climate Coalition
Established in 1989, the Global Climate Coalition (GCC) is now defunct. They were the primary industry group lobbying on issues relating to global climate change. The GCC, which represented more than 230,000 private corporations and business trade associations, tried to "coordinate business participation in the scientific and policy debate on the global climate issue." As of December 2004, their website was still up at:

Science and Environmental Policy Project
Headed by S. Fred Singer, a well-known climate-change skeptic, the Science and Environmental Policy site contains articles by Dr. Singer and others critiquing the scientific basis of climate change theories. Links are provided to similar groups and to policy think tanks.

Western Fuels Association
The Western Fuels Association is a cooperative enterprise operating to "provide coal for the generation of electricity by consumer-owned electric utilities throughout the Great Plains, Rocky Mountain, Southwest states and Louisiana." The organization also focuses on forestry issues.
